MvBlogosphere Companion Extension 0.2

What is it?

This is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox web browser that enables hiding and highlighting of blogs from the mvblogs.org listing.

Say, you are at work or you let your children use the computer and you know that some blogs listed on mvblogs.org are inappropriate for a work environment and children, how do you safely browse the blog listing on mvblogs then? Currently mvblogs.org has no native functionality to allow one to do filtering.

This extension will let you select which blogs you do not want to see in the listing and which blogs you’d like to appear highlighted.

How does it work?

mvblogs-example

Consider the image above. The extension renders mvblogs.org listing with some buttons visible adjacent to each entry. These buttons are:

  • A highlight button
Click this button to highlight the blog. The highlighted blog will remain in this highlighted state forever (when you reload mvblogs etc) until you decide to remove the highlight.
  • A hide blog button
The mighty mvblogs censor feature. There’s a blog you don’t like? Well then, all it takes is a click and the blog will not appear in the listing from then on.
  • A remove highlight button
Highlight can be removed with this button.

What do I require to use this extension?

Just the Mozilla Firefox browser – any version.

    - Show Favicons: This option will show the Favicon next to listed blogs
    - Hide all blogs: Useful if you do not want to see any blog listings (for some reason)
    - Hide Flickr Column: You don’t like to see the Flickr blogger listing? This option is your friend.
    - Enable filtering: this is the crucial one. Keep this enabled and blogs you don’t like won’t be listed.
    - Show highlight: blogs that you have highlighted will only appear so if this option is ticked
  • Filtered blogs: as you go about life with this extension installed this list will grow. This is where you go to remove (or unblock / unhide) blogs. Just delete the corresponding blog URL from this list.
  • Highlighted blogs: save as above except this contains the highlighted blogs
  • Click OK and visit mvblogs.org and enjoy a better experience!

Is this meant for encouraging self-censorship?

This is a very useful extension. Yes it encourages self-censorship, because at the end of the day, it is up to us to decide what we want to see, and up to us to decide what our children should and should not see. Keep up the good work mvblogs.

If mvblogs.org allowed something like this natively on the website itself, it would still be considered self-censorship. The admins of mvblogs.org simply have no time to conduct censorship and moderate the listing in general.

    Thanks for your support.

Congrats, Simon. This is what we really need so that we have a choice to decide which sites we want rather than censoring free speech altogether. Great job!

MapleStory(mesos) is an online adventure game that centers around the “Maple World,” allowing players to combat monsters and develop their characters mesos skills and abilities in an immense platform-inspired persistent world. Players, using charming characters, interact through chatting, trading, and playing mini-games while surrounded by vibrant backgrounds. Groups of players can consolidate in parties or guilds to socialize, hunt monsters, or embark on quests.

MapleStory's innovative cash shop offers players the election to use real currency to pay for game enhancements, from cosmetic items such as haircuts and clothing, to virtual pets that can be trained to sit, stand, and breathe fire. This feature is purely optional and players can try out items prior to purchase in a virtual dressing room. Players create truly unique identities in MapleStory through avatar customizations. The challenge and key in the game service level is undoubtedly the right balancing. As you may have noticed, MapleStory Europe’s content updates were mesos rather frequent and aggressive over the past few months. We had major updates every month with new maps, modes and even job classes, and with each release we tried to offer a balanced portion of new capacity to our existing and new players at the same time. For instance, players who have been with us for a while and who had played in other MapleStory services before know exactly what they can expect from MapleStory in terms of cheer and basic modes. Knowing this, we tried to catch up with the global version of MapleStory mesos which had been launched two years ahead of us, and also released maps and quests for our higher level players. On the other hand, we try to take care of our new players at the same time with appropriate release of content, beginner-friendly events and updates of game tutorials. The recently launched “Knights of Cygnus” addressed both groups of players, as newcomers can take advantage of the easier yet complete entry tutorial and speedy level-up, while our existing players can upgrade their MapleStory experience with a perfectly new, additional character and set of skills.
